Courtyard Reimagined
This Pound Ridge homeowner was ready to eliminate their lawn in favor of a native habitat. Given the shady exposure, we created a lush woodland garden that naturally blends in with the existing mature trees and the character and color of the home.
We planted northeast native woodland species in a matrix, weaving in drifts of wild ginger, wood poppy and columbine among the sedges, ferns, foamflower, and heuchera. On the sunny edge along the driveway, we planted a hedge of hoary mountain mint and a dash of woodland phlox to create an inviting entrance to the path toward the front door.
Field Notes
Columbine was planted in front of Marc’s office so he could watch & identify hummingbirds.
Planted sedges & phlox specifically to allow them to self-sow and naturalize & create a dynamic element.
Walkway to house framed with low growing sedges.
Added more dog hobble to complement a naturally growing stand.
